"Oh the places we go" in FIRST GRADE!

Hope everyone is enjoying all of your Read Across America festivities going on in your classrooms!
We have also been busy here in Room 112. This was my first "Dr. Suess" day and we went all out!!

My favorite activity has to have been our Lorax mustaches!! Our green pod of 1st grade classrooms switched classrooms and we did some Suess stations! Our station included reading some selections from the Lorax (which the children loved because many of them have also seen the movie!) and brainstorming and charting ways we can help save our earth.
We then made our mustaches as a fun make and take to leave school with!

How cute are those Truffala trees!? Another teacher made them last year and was sweet enough to let me use them for the day! She is so crafty!

I also incorporated Dr. Suess into our Reading Lesson on "Fluency Friday". Students got to work in pairs to read the book "Green Eggs and Ham". I found an awesome script and "tch" endings activity on Have Fun Teaching's website! Click on the video below to hear us reading a little from our play!

Our PTO did an AMAZING job of decorating each of our common areas this year. Our pod is Disney themed! I think they know that one of the Green Pod teachers has a Disney obsession!!!!! (Maybe they hear the music I play after school!? ) This week we will be going around and reading "Across America" at each of the different decorated pods (Rocky Mountains, Disney etc.) It is going to be so much fun for the kids!

We started our social studies patriotism unit last week. We were singing the national anthem, reciting the pledge.. it got me feeling quite proud to be an American!!! The kids did a great job of making some beautiful flags after learning some fun flag facts! We also listened to a few different recordings of the national anthem, but my favorite has to be Natalie Weiss. I LOVEEE her voice and I had her playing on repeat in the background while we made our flags.

Check out those killer vocals: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0tGZRxLXjSg

While we listened to Natalie sing, I had the children put together the national anthem puzzle. They cut apart the song lyrics, mixed them up, and then numbered them once they heard her sing the phrase. It took a couple times to listen and analyze, but we did a great job of putting the song together again.

I have SO much more to share, but I am fading fast!!!!!! I'll be sure to post again after our busy week!!

Please feel free to comment and share any wonderful Suess activities you do in your classroom!!:)
