Thank you Abe + George!

Happy President's Day Eve,
We are off tomorrow for Presidents Day (Yay!) which means I can get a little blogging in while catching up on some Glee reruns! :)

First, I want to show you how our Dental Health bulletin board turned out!! It was up just in time for our Dental Health Assembly that we had this week. The kids loved sharing the facts they learned with our visiting dentist.

We also started our unit on contractions. We did 2 activities this week with contractions, starting out with contraction surgery!!! I saw this idea from Cara Carroll on The First Grade Parade. Students were given a list of words that can be made into contractions. They had to cut apart the letters that they didn't need to make the contraction. We then used bandages to to put the full word together! My mom works as a neonatal nurse and was able to smuggle me in some hospital masks! The kids loved becoming word surgeons:)

I also added a fun Valentine's twist to our second contraction activity. We made contraction heart butterflies! On each heart we had to write the word as two separate words and then as a contraction.
They were a great decoration for our hallway for Valentine's Day!

Speaking of Valentine's Day, we incorporated the holiday celebration into our math lesson as well! I am not sure which blogger this came from, but it is wonderful!!
Students were each given a handful of candy hearts. They had to graph their color results. We had to make a little change because the brand I bought had blue hearts instead of white!

I also want to give a special shoutout to "Miss Danielle" our mystery reader this week. Danielle is my cousin/best friend and she came  to read our class a book on Valentine's Day. She is graduating in May with a chemistry degree, but I can sense a future elementary educator in her, haha!!!

With all these Valentine's activities I felt very LOVED by the end of this week. My students were so generous with their cards and treats for me! I am one lucky teacher! (Check out this giant hershey kiss, they have learned I am a choco-holic!)

Have a wonderful President's day everyone!!
