I woke up uncharacteristically early today and actually have time for a quick post before I leave for school (Gasp! Am I turning into a morning person!?)
I had an amazing Mother's Day celebration with my Mom and family. I loved seeing all the creative projects coming down the halls on Friday afternoon. Teachers are great at making moms feel special.
Our class was learning about "Adjectives" so I decided to incorporate that into our gift for our moms. I found this super cute poem titled "If you give a Mom a Muffin.." which was based on the popular children's book series. The children glued the poem on their paper along with a paper muffin that they created covered with adjectives to describe their mothers.
You can download the poem here: http://audthebroad.blogspot.com/2013/04/my-if-you-give-mom-muffin-kind-of.html
We also practiced 2 Mother's Day poems throughout the week so they could read these to their moms on Sunday morning.
In honor of our moms, you can download this poem ***freebie*** at the end of my post!
To go along with my wonderful week, I was surprised by my class for teacher appreciation week!!! Those sneaky kids :) The kids made me a wonderful book filled with their favorite activities from the year and favorite things about their teacher. I also got a stylish and useful new ThirtyOne bag to cart all my paperwork back and forth from home to school! I am so blessed and fortunate to be surrounded by wonderful students and families!
Here are some photos of our spring adventures!
Living and Non-Living things on Earth Writing
We planted our sunflowers this week-- the kids will be so excited when they begin to grow (let's hope I remember to water them daily ;)
We also do special animal reports each spring. I put my students in 5 different groups: Llamas, Tigers, Cheetahs, Turtles, and Eagles. Students were read the story by an adult helper. They then had to work as a group to fill in their concept map. Concept map questions included "What my animal looks like", "What is my animal's habitat?", "What does my animal eat?" and "What are some interesting facts about my animal". Students than wrote a sloppy copy report based on their concept map facts. This was a HUGE change for my first graders as we have only done one report style piece so far. We really had to practice the skill of turning our "notes" on our concept map, into full complete sentences on our sloppy copy. We will be presenting our final copies at our spring Open House! This project was amazing to see the growth in each child's writing abilities.
I will be snapping some more wonderful photos during these last few busy weeks of school. I absolutely cannot believe this school year is coming to an END! My first year of first grade flew by and I grew so much as an educator. Looking forward to what the future has to bring!
