Mamma Mia!!! Welcome to Olindo's Fraction Pizzeria

Happy Friday!
When I am this exhausted on a Friday night, I know we had one FUN week. Looking through my phone at some of these pictures, I can see how much we covered! We were productive little workers in Room 112 :)

1st up are some fun activities from our Fraction math unit. Before we got into the nitty gritty of fractions, we did a lesson on "fair share" and how to split various plane shapes into equal parts. For this, I opened Olindo's cookie factory (A pizzeria, a cookie shop, and a 1st grade teacher? I am quite the entrepreneur! HA). Students each got a paper plate and 12 cookies. I read them various prompts (like the one below) and had them figure out with their manipulatives how many cookies each child would get after their trip to Olindo's Cookie Factory.

Example: 4 children from Mrs. Jones' class visit the factory. Miss Olindo puts out 12 cookies. How many cookies would each child get?

A few days after our cookie factory, Room 112 turned into a Pizzeria! My inner Italian was thrilled (and hungry) from making these crafty pizzas! The kids LOVED it and were really able to practice using their fractions they had learned earlier in the week. Below are a few yummy examples!

I also updated my "We missed you!" or Absence folders this week. I found the cutest covers on "What the Teacher Wants" and made it my weekly project to make brand spankin' new folders. Love how they turned out!

Here is a link if you would like to download the covers:

One thing I adore about end of the year first graders is realizing how far they have come in one year. This really dawned on me this week when we did our Fly Swatter Vowel Pair Game. I was able to put up SO many various vowel pairs that we have covered this year. I couldn't believe it as I was preparing the game-- these kiddos mastered all of these!? Wow! What a smart bunch:)
I put the kiddos in teams and read them various words. The student had to think about what vowel pair/blend we learned that they would need to spell the word correctly and be the first to swat it!

Last but not least I wanted to show off some fabulous writing!
Earlier in the week we were finishing up our letters to our Baltimore City Pen Pals.
The students were so eager to write back and answer their pen pals questions, and this was one of the first writings where I didn't have any students with writers block! We also got to incorporate an impromptu Social Studies lesson when we located our Baltimore City friends on our classroom map and talked about different communities (rural, suburban, and urban living environments).

We also began reading some of our Earth day literature and brainstorming some things we love about the Earth. We also began to chat about ways to keep it clean.
Below is a little preview shot of my Earth Day writing model. Get pumped for our student samples coming soon!:)

Happy Weekend!!!!
