Hello Everyone!

I've begun my new job teaching first grade! I'm super excited and had an amazing first week, but man am I exhausted!!! I think the fates wanted to help a new teacher out, and I got two extra days to stay at home and grade papers and plan because of Hurricane Sandy! (Please be careful out there everyone!!!)
I have such a wonderful group of people to work with and they were all super helpful this week. I am so blessed to have ended up in such a wonderful school!

Week one was all about fire safety!! We had firemen come in and the kids even got to sit in the truck... they all thought that was the coolest thing. We had read a book about fire safety the day before, and they loved to show off their new knowledge when talking to the firemen. My class is full of hams;)

To show our appreciation, I centered our writing around their visit. We wrote thank you notes to the firemen and I put them all together in one little book which we sent over to the local fire station.

On Friday, being the new cool teacher that I am, I decided to make these cute firedog bookmarks. Credit goes completely to the teacher I took over for (found these in her October file!) Turned out so cute... and hopefully promoted some reading over their stormy weekend!

Hopefully, we will be back in business by Wednesday because I will be super duper sad if I don't get to all the fun Halloween ideas I have planned for this week... OR... we can just enjoy the holiday a week after too!

One of the great Halloween writing activities I found is by Susan Moran over at TGIF.

She has a pack full of Halloween activities, but this was definitley my favorite.. It goes great with our focus on adding "details" to our writing. http://thankgoditsfirstgrade.blogspot.com/2012/09/one-haunted-halloween-write-stuff.html

Thats all for now friends! Gonna publish this before my power goes--- Stay safe all those on the East Coast!

XOXO Miss Olindo

PS: Some Sandy humor I found online to lighten up the situation:
