Volcanoes and Fact Families

I have been busy uploading pictures and blogging today since we have a long President's Day weekend break! Never a day of rest for us teachers:)
I uploaded a picture of a Volcano activity we did to correspond with one of Guided Reading books called "Try This". The nonfiction book listed 5 different experiments and the steps and materials you would need to complete each experiment. We decided to try one of them in our classroom today-- The Erupting Volcano.
We got a plastic water bottle, baking soda, clay (not necessary, just for aesthetics) 3 drops of red food dye, and vinegar. Don't forget a plastic mat or paper towels to help soak up the mess!
Put the baking soda and red food dye in first. Then add your vinegar until the explosion occurs! Students absolutely LOVED this and it was a great way to connect everyday life with what they were reading

I also wanted to post a link to this great fact family game we played with the students
You can find it at
http://firstgradeschoolbox.blogspot.com/2012/01/fact-family-cards.html
We printed each set of 8 houses out on 5 different colors of paper. We placed students at 5 different tables and then had them work at each colored station. They had to match the cut out fact family members to their correct houses. We also created a handout to go along with each color station where students have to create all the facts (addition and subtraction) that go with each fact family. It was great for peer cooperation as they worked in teams to match all the houses. It was also great because it involved movement as they migrated to all the different stations.
